Don’t fall for any fashion trends, fall for the Fabulous Fall Ready to Wear!

Clothing Provided by Maria & Kyndal’s Boutique

Maria & Kyndal's Fall Fashion

This fall, the colors are going bolder and the styles are super chic.

The most noticable trend to groove its way into fall is an inspiration from the sixties. Think Mary Quant’s Mini Skirt, Vidal Sassoon Bob, and Swinging London. Here is a modernized funky print reminiscent of the era’s fun and psychedelic patterns. This fabulous forgiving frock showcases curves while lengthening all heights with its straight lines and beautiful dark green trim and a small embellishment on the cuff. The deep V slims and elongates the neckline and the vertical line down the front brings all eyes up to your precious peepers. Just add your bare legs, boots, and behave baby!

Another trend emerges from the depths of Art class: The collage! Patterns, Prints, Bling and Fling! This top’s personality must be on par with your outspoken personality! The deep V has its own Bling! Double sleeves for double trouble! Look out for the ruffled leopard polka dots! Be bold and be seen! Pair this top with a soft-spoken pant, capri, jean, and legging. But if you are super spicy, a bright heel doesn’t hurt

For the minimal Minnie’s, wear Block Colors. These can be bright, but also can be basic. Pair this precious chocolate laced gathered tank with a staple black cardigan and your favorite pair of jeans. The Jeans can be mean so know the best shape for your body make. If you are a skinny jean, wear it! If you prefer boot cut or straight leg, wear it! The only trend that will come and go is the bell bottom. Stick to what looks best for your body as jeans will always be your thing.

The interpretation of the men’s tuxedo in women’s ready to wear has been a recurring theme. Classic Chic. This fall we will continue to see this look adapted to a flattering, fashionable shape for women. This top is incredibly versatile and can serve many functions in your wardrobe. The yoked shoulder, the pleating and the deep V give this silk number a feminine flair. Belt it or leave it loose with a dramatic necklace for personal flair. Create a casual look with denim or a classic look with black pants or skirt.

New Clothes, New Friends, and a Safe Place

Clothing flew off the racks and off of the tables at the Kennedy Style Clothing Exchange this past Sunday, July 31!

Lisa Kennedy w Kennedy Style

A great group of women got together at Link Coworking (West Anderson Lane), to exchange each other’s clothing and give to the local organization, SafePlace.

Niel & Cindy

Guests were greeted by Lisa Kennedy’s fabulous husband, Niel, to check in to the event.

In order to receive an entry pass into the event, each guest was required to bring at least 5 items of clothing or accessories.

Guests were allowed to take home as many items as they brought. If a guest wanted to take home more items, they could purchase them with a five dollar donation to SafePlace. Their donations were organized by color, style, and size.

Mingling Guests

While the “store” was created in the back, guests mingled and munched before the short presentation about Safe Place by Amy, and a fashion talk about upcoming Fall trends by Lisa Kennedy.

Amy from Safe Place

The mission of SafePlace is to help women and children escape domestically violent situations and start a new life.
Amy inspired the guests by showing them how much SafePlace appreciated their efforts.

She explained that many of the women who come to SafePlace are lucky to get out of their dangerous circumstances with the clothing on their backs.

They need new clothing in order to begin their new lives, find a job, and start over.

KS Fall Trends

Display clothing was provided by Maria and Kyndal’s Boutique 6317 Bee Cave Rd, Austin, TX 78746 (Next to Grove Wine Bar) to assist Lisa in her Fashion Talk about the upcoming Fall trends.

See Fall 2011 Fashion Trend Blog for the Kennedy Style full Fall report.

Among the trends she discussed were, the inspirations from the sixties era, a visit to art class with a collage of prints, unexpected color combinations, and feminine versions of the men’s tuxedo.

The professional consultant gave the guests direction of how to translate these trends into outfits like the ones shown from the boutique.

She explained how these styles will flatter certain body types, and motivated guests to prepare for Fall shopping.

Prizes

Prizes were given to the two top clothing donators at the exchange!

Let the exchange begin! Fall 2011 Ready to Wear fashion shows were projected onto the wall and fun music played in the background as the women picked through each other’s clothing and found great new outfits for their own wardrobes.

The small, numbered rooms were perfect fitting rooms, as guests could try on the clothing and model it for everyone to see.

We had such a great time enjoying each other’s fellowship and giving to this important cause!

After all was said and done, the guests of the clothing exchange were able to give over 100 items of clothing and accessories to the women and children at SafePlace.

We hope to see you at the next Kennedy Style Event!

2011-03-17 04:00:01.11 GMT

By Neel Shah

March 17 (Bloomberg) — It was just past the ladies-who-

lunch hour at the Pacific Palisades outpost of Drybar, Los

Angeles’ first high-end blowout-only chain, and manager Melanee

Lindahl was surveying the coifferati.

Six women had come in and were paying $35 each to have a

trained professional wet and dry their hair.

“That’s Tricia,” Lindahl said, pointing to a blonde in

her mid-30s. “Last month she literally came in every day. Now

she’s down to about two or three times a week.” She pointed to

another blonde, also in her mid-30s, ultra-thin and attractive.

“She’s here a couple of times a week as well. Usually right

after yoga.”

Such devotion isn’t unusual, Lindahl said. Most of her

clients are happy to outsource their blow-drying needs at least

a few times per week.

In the old days, wealthy female Angelenos faced a daunting

choice, Bloomberg Businessweek reports in its March 21 issue.

They could wash, blow-dry and style their own hair at home, or

go to a fancy salon like Chris McMillan, where blowouts start at

$85. While that may seem like a steep price for a service that

basically amounts to having someone blast hot air through your

tresses while brushing it, discount operations such as Fantastic

Sams didn’t quite jibe with the BMW 7-Series crowd.

“There was a definite hole in the market here,” said Alli

Webb, a Drybar co-founder. “L.A. has a lot of people who are

very focused on their appearance, and they care about beauty.”

Webb realized the demand for the third-party blow-drying

service after her Los Angeles-based mobile blowout business,

Straight-at-Home, took off in 2008. She figured the blowout-only

concept could work in brick-and-mortar form and enlisted her

brother, marketing executive Michael Landau.

                        Blowout Model

At the time, the blowout-only model was still in its

infancy. In 2005, Blow opened in New York City and helped

champion the cheap blowout as an indispensable part of one’s

beauty regime. (It opened a second New York location in 2008.)

While a similar outfit, Blo, sprouted in Vancouver and Toronto,

Los Angeles remained an untapped market.

Last February, Webb and Landau established the first Drybar

in Brentwood — the epicenter of what they refer to as the

“yummy mummy” set, their base clientele.

The store opened with a simple concept: Customers could

choose from one of five styles (ranging from “messy and

beachy” Mai Tai to the “sleek and smooth” Manhattan), then

sip a glass of complimentary champagne while watching “How to

Lose a Guy in 10 Days” on a flat-screen TV, all for $35. After

30 minutes, customers would be audition-ready, or at least ready

to meet their friends at Fred Segal. Soon Drybar was doing 70 to

90 blowouts a day.

“At our price point, it becomes addictive,” Landau said.

“We make up in volume what we’re losing in margin.”

                        Yummy Mummies

After conquering the yummy mummies, Webb and Landau began

opening locations throughout Los Angeles during 2010, each

targeting a different demographic. The Pacific Palisades

boutique was intended to lure the “hot tennis mom” — a woman

“in her early 30s, definitely married, and wants to look better

than the other moms at awards dinners,” explains manager

Lindahl. The West Hollywood store was opened to attract the hip

and famous — Zooey Deschanel, Emma Roberts and Maria Shriver

have all recently popped by — and even includes a VIP room.

The Studio City outpost is geared toward those with day jobs who

want to look good for meetings.

“Before we expanded, I had this moment where I thought to

myself, ‘You know, maybe this is just a crazy Brentwood woman

thing,’” Landau said. “That hasn’t been the case.”

                       Good Hair Days

Instead, Drybar has ushered in the halcyon days of the

quickie blowout trade. Each boutique, averaging 10 chairs, does

between 2,000 and 2,500 blowouts a month, and the chain is on

target to have annualized revenue of around $5 million by the

end of 2011.

“I hate to say this, but it’s true. Your day is better

when your hair looks good,” said Diane Nelson, president of

Time Warner Inc.’s DC Entertainment, who averages one blowout

per week. “It’s an empowerment thing.”

   Actress Rose McGowan agreed.

“When I’m done, I feel and look better,” said McGowan,

who liked Drybar so much she became an investor in the chain.

“It’s a lot cheaper than therapy, and a lot more fun.”

Drybar’s success has led to a veritable blowout war on the

streets of Los Angeles. Canada’s Blo just opened a salon in

Hollywood and is planning a second location in West Hollywood.

My Blow LA set up shop in Beverly Hills last summer and is

scouting for new locations. Bubble Blow Dry, which opened last

May in Brentwood, launched pop-up blow-dry shops in Beverly

Hills and West Hollywood to take advantage of the Oscar-season

surge.

                      Expansion Plans

For now, Webb and Landau are focusing on emerging markets.

In the last two months, the company has opened franchises in

Dallas and in Newport Beach, California. Next month the company

is unveiling a satellite location in Scottsdale, Arizona, with

New York, San Francisco, and Atlanta shops in the works.

“You’re going to see these be successful wherever you have

women who are focused on beauty maintenance,” says Blow co-

founder Julie Flakstad. “Certainly it helps to be in places

where the climate is conducive to maintaining a blowout.”

Sorry, women of Seattle. You’re on your own.

(This is the latest press release from BrazilianBlowout.com)

“What makes Brazilian Blowout ZERO different from other professional smoothing treatments on the market?
Most professional smoothing treatments are formulated using a methylene glycol based bonding system.

Brazilian Blowout ZERO is formulated with a breakthrough Plant-Derived KeraSafe Bonding System. This bonding system releases 0% Formaldehyde before, during or after the in-salon smoothing treatment.
View chemical analytical report

What is KeraSafe?

KeraSafe is a proprietary blend of ingredients combining the original Brazilian Blowout Super Nutrient Complex, rich with powerful smoothing ingredients such as camu camu and annatto seed, with a highly innovative Plant-Derived Bonding System that effectively smoothes and seals the cuticle by creating a protective protein layer around the hair shaft to eliminate frizz and promote shine.

How does Brazilian Blowout ZERO perform compared to the original Brazilian Blowout?

•ZERO difference in performance.
•Same smooth, frizz-free hair in 90 minutes.
•Same process with zero downtime.
•Same incredible results for up to 12 weeks.
•Same deep conditioning and radiant shine.
•Same improvement in overall health of the hair.
•Same Acai Aftercare Products

Is the in-salon ZERO treatment performed the same way as the original Brazilian Blowout smoothing treatment?

YES! The application and treatment process are exactly the same for Brazilian Blowout ZERO as for the original Brazilian Blowout treatment, and the end-result is the same as well!

Are you discontinuing the original Brazilian Blowout Professional Smoothing Solution?

Absolutely not! The original Brazilian Blowout Professional Smoothing Treatment will continue to be offered based on ever-increasing demand for the product.

Why did you choose to launch Brazilian Blowout ZERO if you are confident about the safety and integrity of the original Brazilian Blowout solution?

We remain 100% confident with regards to the safety and integrity of the original BB treatment and will continue to sell this product as it remains incredibly popular throughout the U.S. and worldwide.

Brazilian Blowout ZERO is a NEW Professional Smoothing Treatment alternative that utilizes a plant-derived bonding system.

A number of stylists and consumers may feel more comfortable using this system as a personal preference.”

Feeling the Fabulous Feather Fad?

Customize your own online on the http://kennedystyle.com/store.html

Slowly migrating from Northern California and Colorado, these fabulous feather extensions are the latest craze! The feathers are real chicken feathers that have been sterilized and sometimes dyed for color. There are two different ways to wear them in your hair. The first is attaching your favorite colored feathers into a hair extension clamp and having a professional clamp it to your hair just the same way as a clamped hair extension. These are wonderful for those who know exactly what they want and can commit to a few months of feathers. You can wash and dry your hair as if it was a new part of you. Once they are removed (with pliers) you must find a professional to install them again.
The second option is having a removable feather hair extension. These are perfect for those who have to look professional during the day, or abide by a school uniform, or like to change the position of the clip and colors of their new feather accessory. I have created a way to use a comfortable hair clip that is easily camouflauged allowing the feathers to be the temporary accessory that satisfies your wild side.

Oregon OSHA Confirms:
Exposure to Cosmetologists and Clients is well below OSHA’s Air Level Requirements.

OSHA’s Action Level of 0.5 parts per million is the most stringent level of exposure set by the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

On October 29, 2010, Oregon OSHA released results of a comprehensive air monitoring study conducted across seven salons. Each case yielded formaldehyde exposure levels well beneath OSHA’s Action Level, Permissible Exposure Level (PEL), and Short-Term Exposure Level.

The average Formaldehyde gas exposure level for the seven salons tested by Oregon OSHA was 0.079 parts per million; well beneath the OSHA Action Level of 0.5 parts per million.

Sample Case Study #7 (cited directly from Oregon OSHA’s recent report entitled “Keratin Based” Hair Smoothing Products And the Presence of Formaldehyde):
Case 7: The seventh salon had four stations with a false ceiling. No doors or window were left open and the stylist did not use any fans during the treatment. She did not wear gloves.

Breathing zone samples were placed on the stylist during the process, which took 94 minutes. The samples were changed every 15 minutes. Samples were also placed to the right of the stylist, near the stylist’s sink and to the left of the stylist. The stylist’s peak exposure was 0.471 ppm, while applying the solution. Her average exposure during the procedure was 0.255 ppm and the 8 hour average was 0.050 ppm.

The results did not exceed the 8-hour limit and it is unlikely that multiple treatments would have done so.
In referencing Brazilian Blowouts recently released air sample test results, Oregon OSHA confirms the following:

“The company released air monitoring results on October 15, 2010, taken from two stylists performing two treatments each in a single salon. The only results reported were for the eight-hour average exposure, which came to 0.064 ppm for one stylist and 0.073 ppm for the other. The middle of the salon also was tested, providing an eight-hour average of 0.016.58

In general, these results – although less detailed – are not inconsistent with Oregon OSHA’s air monitoring results, which included both results that were higher and results that were lower than those reported by the company.”

CONCLUSION: Air sample tests conducted by Oregon OSHA and HSA (those published by Brazilian Blowout) yield remarkably consistent results; both demonstrating that formaldehyde exposure levels are safely below OSHA’s Action Level.

What is a Brazilian Blowout?

The official Answer:
‘Through the use of a Brazilian Super Nutrient Complex and a proprietary polymer system, the Brazilian Blowout actually improves the condition of the hair by creating a protective protein layer around the hair shaft to eliminate frizz and smooth the cuticle. The end result is smooth, healthy, frizz-free hair with radiant shine! What makes us different? The ONLY Professional Smoothing Treatment that improves the health of the hair. No Damage! No harsh chemicals! CONTAINS NO FORMALDEHYDE! Entire treatment completed in just 90 minutes! No down time! The minute you leave the salon, you can wash and air dry your hair, and it will be smooth, frizz-free and radiant! Results last up to 12 weeks. Leaves hair smooth, shiny and frizz-free! It is possible to get your hair colored and a Brazilian Blowout in the same appointment. Acai aftercare products ensure longest lasting results.’

As a professional hair stylist, I have not seen anything like it. I think its revolutionary for the hair industry and will be around for a long time. I used to use smelly relaxers for people with curly hair and their hair would be dead straight. As soon as their hair started to grow it was obvious they had curly roots and straight mid-lengths and ends. With the Brazilian Blowout, you do get the ultra-straight result, but with the natural ‘fading’ back to your wave and curl over the 12 weeks to match your roots when it grows out. Think of it as a semi-permanent color that gradually fades so you don’t get the harsh regrowth line.

There has been a lot of controversy regarding the ingredients and whether or not it contains Formaldehyde. The research states that it does not contain Formaldehyde and that it is no more harmful than using permanent color, other relaxers, and perm solutions. The difference with the Brazilian Blowout is that it does NOT touch your scalp so as a client you don’t even get in contact with the product! I wear gloves, but I wear gloves when I apply color so I don’t feel it’s a big deal. To read the official Brazilian Blowout statement, go to this link: http://www.brazilianblowout.com/new-press

My client, Evette, just had it done on the 12th of October and is giving me updates for this blog entry. I have included a before and after photo as well as a 2 days later photo. I will add more photos as the weeks go on to see her 12 week results with the Brazilian Blowout.

Day 1: October 12, 2010: “I am happy that there is not a chemical smell and my hair felt healthier. The ‘split ends’ looked visibly gone!” Evette

After Brazilian Blowout

After Brazilian Blowout

Day 3: October 15th, 2010: “I’ve washed it twice since leaving the salon and took a photo of my hair wet and there is still some curl in it, but with my round brush and blow dryer, my hair now only takes me about 10 minutes vs. 30 minutes to straighten. I don’t get creases with my pony tail and it stays straight with the humidity. It is super straight which is a change for me but I know it will gradually fade and add some body back.” Evette

After 2 washes - Wet hair

Week 4: November 17th 2010: “I’ve let my hair dry twice and each time it starts to curl like my regular hair, but after a few hours the curl falls out and sometimes I have a cool wave, sorta beachy. Also, I’ve used a large barrel curling iron and it keeps the curl!!!!!! Of course with the help of hairspray, but I thought it wouldn’t stay a all!” Evette

Week 7: December 7th 2010: “Here is a photo of my hair wet and a photo of my hair after a 10 minute blowdry with a round brush. I have been able to get the body back at the roots but the ends are still super straight. The only complaint that I have is the static, but that may due to the winter weather.”

7 Weeks - Wet Hair

Week 12: January 4th: “I can tell that I’m at the end of the Brazilian Blowout because it takes just as long as it used to to dry my hair. I can’t curl or scrunch my hair dry yet. It can only be straigntened.”

12 Weeks Wet hair

Gunn’s Golden Rules by Tim Gunn

I recently finished reading Gunn’s Golden Rules, by Tim Gunn of Project Runway. I want to pass along some of the context that inspired me. I wholeheartedly recommend reading this book if you are into the backstage fashion gossip as well as relating to an old fashioned ‘manners still matter’ point of view.

“Do everything one thousand percent. You could be editor in chief some day!”

#1 Make it Work
“I had to make the best of the bad situation. What I found was that if I did that, the situation would rapidly become less bad, whereas if I hid from it or tried to make it go away, I would get more and more anxious and the situation would get worse and worse. I learned very early the wisdom of making it – whatever it was – work.”

“If you look at the process of creating a work of art or a design as a journey of one hundred steps, steps one through ninety-five are relatively easy. It’s the last five that are hard. How do you achieve closure? How do you finish it? That’s the hard part.”

#2 The World Owes you…Nothing
“I look forward to seeing what the next generations of fashion designers and magazines look like. Between the demise of so many publications and the decline in fashion company fortunes, I wonder whether we’re heading for a new age of decency and diligence. I would certainly rather the industry not go broke, but if that’s what it takes for everyone to acquire some values and lose that sense of enlightenment, maybe a little belt-tightening wouldn’t be so tragic.”

#3 Taking the High Road
“In the absence of choking hazards, taking the high road is a good strategy. You never know where the people you’re dealing with today are going to be in twenty years – or next month! Even if you’re a really selfish person and are only looking out for own self-interest, you should treat people well. Why bitch-slap someone unless you’re leaving the planet for good? Don’t burn bridges; you might need those bridges later.”

#4 Don’t Abuse Your Power – or Surrender It
“There is absolutely never any reason to be a fire-breathing dragon.”

“Everyone wants to work with people who are low maintenance. You have a huge advantage over the competition if, in addition to being a talent, you are easy to work with.”

“Again, that doesn’t mean being a doormat. In twenty-nine years of teaching, I often had times when I had to have sit-downs with my students, but I did so calmly. I would say, ‘Look, things are not going well,’ and explain what needed to change. If the students took what I said seriously, we all had a great time and they learned a lot. If they didn’t, then they got bad grades and we all moved on with our lives. That’s all you need to do.”

#8 Physical Comfort is Overrated
“When we look good, we feel better. That’s true for everyone. You feel better able to tackle the world. It’s not a good feeling going into an exam without having prepared, and it’s not a good feeling leaving the house without having dressed to be around people. Just the way it never rains when you have an umbrella, you’ll never run into people if you look fantastic. But go outside in your pajamas, and you’ll run in to every ex you have.”

“I get very impatient with this whole ‘comfort issue’ with clothing. Yes, you don’t feel as comfortable in clothes that fit you as you do in your pajamas and robe. That’s a good thing. You’re navigating a world where you need to have your wits about you. If you’re in a lackadaisical comfort haze, you can’t be engaged in the world the way you need to be.”
“People who are lazy about grooming make me a little crazy. And I’m not talking about getting a blowout or putting on a ton of makeup or getting a haircut every week. I’m talking about bathing and other basics. What are you saying about yourself and about your feelings for the people around you if you give up on the simple things? You’re saying, ‘I don’t care.’ And if you don’t care about yourself or the people around you, why should others care about you?”

“Doing as many makeovers as I do, I’ve learned a few things about what makes women feel better about themselves. The starting point is usually getting a new haircut.
